Artist residencies in the Cotswolds

Sonja van Kerkhoff is a New Zealand artist living in the Netherlands. Travelling extensively and exhibiting internationally she also works as a curator, most recently curating 'Kei Te Tarai O Te Whenua / In the Land Sculpture' at Otaki Forks Artspace, New Zealand, 2014.

Sonja works fluidly, traversing cultural borders as well as media, making work in performance, film, photography and installation. Narrative and text are often employed in her works which are informed by the autobiographic but also reference social and political issues such as migration and colonization. She frequently works collaboratively with other artists, most frequently with Sen McGlinn, a fellow New Zealander. Her works are often interactive and occur in the public domain as well as the gallery or museum space.

Sonja studied at The School of Art Otago New Zealand and Maastricht School of Visual Arts and has a Masters in Media Technology from Leiden University.

Whilst working as 2014 ART PITCH artist in residence, Sonja undertook a period of research into recently discovered archive material of previously unknown family in the UK. This research includes material about her maternal great grandfather who died in Flanders Fields in 1917. She examined the resulting re-alignment of histories, memories and identities.
